Understanding carbon footprint calculations
We calculate shipping distance from each retailer's main hub to your location using geographic coordinates.
Different shipping methods (standard, express, overnight) have different carbon intensities based on vehicle type and efficiency.
Heavier products generate more emissions. We multiply distance × shipping factor × weight to get total CO₂ output.
Results are categorized from very-low to very-high impact. Offset costs are calculated at AUD $0.015 per kg CO₂.

Our calculations are based on industry-standard emission factors for different shipping methods. Actual emissions may vary based on vehicle load optimization and routing. We use conservative estimates to ensure accuracy.
Some retailers use renewable energy or have optimized logistics. Our current calculations use industry averages. Choose retailers with the lowest footprint for best results.

This is the estimated cost to neutralize the CO₂ emissions through verified carbon offset programs (typically tree planting or renewable energy projects). One tree absorbs ~20kg CO₂ over its lifetime.
For lighter items, distance is less critical because the absolute emissions are low. However, if a retailer is very close AND has low emissions, it's still a good choice. For heavy items, local sourcing becomes much more important.
